He was a member of the Masonic Lodge at Cairo and the Tehoma Temple of Shrine, Scottish Rite. He was a mechanic by profession, having worked for the railroad. During the depression he turned to farming. He was best known by everyone as Sam.

Samuel’s World War I draft registration card, which was dated August 27, 1918, does not give much information concerning Samuel. It does confirm his date and place of birth as indicated above. He was twenty-one at the time of his registration. He is described as being tall and slender of build and as having blue eyes and light brown hair.
