Grant, as he was known, worked for the Northwestern Public Service Company. He retired in 1960. At the time of his first marriage, Grant was a farmer and worked on his father's farm at Mason City, Nebraska.

Grant's World War I draft registration card, dated June 5, 1917, tells us that he was living in Mason City, Nebraska, that he was born on the date given above and that he was a self-employed farmer. He was described as being tall in height and of medium build. He had brown eyes and dark brown hair.
